Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's best-known surf destination, with several point breaks including Main Point, Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm. Even if you do not surf, the long beach, yoga studios, cafes and relaxed atmosphere make it a good place to rest. Lagoon safaris show crocodiles and birds, and Kumana National Park, to the south, is known for its birdlife. Nearby sights include the ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple. It is much quieter than the south coast beaches, and many places close outside the season.
