Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka and the gateway for most visitors, though the airport itself is in Katunayake, to the north. The city mixes colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, mosques, churches and modern malls. Walk along Galle Face Green at sunset, explore the busy Pettah market, visit the Gangaramaya Temple, the National Museum and the Independence Memorial Hall, and see the striking red-and-white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. The Dutch Hospital precinct has restaurants and shops, and the Lotus Tower is a modern landmark. Many travellers spend a day or two here at the start or end of their trip.
