About Dambulla Cave Temple

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a Buddhist rock temple on a hill above the plains, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its tradition goes back to the 1st century BC, when King Valagamba is said to have taken refuge here. Five main caves contain more than 150 statues of the Buddha and of kings and gods, and the walls and ceilings are covered with detailed painted murals. The views from the hill extend across the countryside towards Sigiriya. At the foot of the hill is the Golden Temple with its large golden Buddha statue.
