Kandy was the capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom until it fell to the British in 1815, and the sacred city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is built around a lake in the hills. Its main sight is the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses a relic believed to be a tooth of the Buddha and is a major pilgrimage site. Evening puja ceremonies and drumming are a highlight. Nearby are the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, the Bahirawakanda Buddha statue, Udawattakele forest, craft shops and traditional Kandyan dance shows. The Esala Perahera festival in July or August is one of Asia's great processions.
