Mirissa is a small beach town near Matara on the south coast, built around a fishing harbour and a crescent beach. It is best known for whale watching: blue whales, and sometimes sperm whales and dolphins, are seen from boats that leave early in the morning during the season. The beach is good for swimming in calm months, with surf breaks nearby, and Coconut Tree Hill and Parrot Rock are popular viewpoints. Evenings are for seafood and sunsets. Sightings depend on sea conditions and are never guaranteed.
